Major Dickason’s Blend®

Born in the earliest days of Peet’s, Major Dickason’s Blend is the result of collaboration between a customer a local gourmand and coffee aficionado and Alfred Peet. It's the result of a shared love of coffee, an expert's palate combined with a customer's passion.

Key Dickason was a customer at our original Vine Street store. One day he brought in a blend idea, which intrigued Mr. Peet. He refined the blend, adding two further coffees to its original form. Alfred Peet named the blend in honor of his friend, promoting the retired army sergeant to Major in the process.

There is no other coffee that so perfectly epitomizes Peet’s: the full, rich taste, the complex tapestry of flavors in perfect harmony, the satisfaction from year to year.

Decaf Major Dickason’s Blend®

Major Dickason’s is our most beloved blend. Born in the earliest days of Peet’s, it's the result of collaboration between a customer a local gourmand and coffee aficionado and Alfred Peet. We are proud to introduce a decaf version of this perennial customer favorite, made of some of the finest coffees in the world, for a full-bodied, bright, bold and flavorful cup.

For Decaf Major Dickason’s, we set out to blend the finest cup of decaf you can drink. We used the same premium coffees as the original for a decaf that is full of flavor, body and aroma, with a mellow, satisfying richness. The resulting coffee stands alone among decafs. It's our boldest decaf yet – and we think "Major D" would be proud.

Espresso Forte®

Espresso Forte is the blend we created specifically with espresso in mind, with flavors that are abundant and bold. Its name connotes both strength and its special aptitude for the most demanding method of preparation.

Espresso Forte strikes the right balance between the earthy satisfaction of Indonesia and Papua coffee and the brightness and spiciness that are characteristic of the Americas. While it reveals its best attributes in traditional espresso preparation methods, it also makes a good cup from a press pot or cone filter.

Review: I used Major Dickenson beans for years in my espresso machine. A few years back I found this blend and I have been in love ever since! It is so perfect as espresso but does very nicely in a drip machine when I am the only one NOT drinking decaf after a lovely evening meal. Too bad so few know about it or have tried it. Perhaps because you never find it in stores.

Review: I was using a dark (Italian) roast from a local roaster, and this was quite nice. Once Peet's opened up nearby I started getting the Espresso Forte for my daily fix. There is no going back. I get the whole bean and grind it myself for my Pasquini Livia 90 (also purchased at a Peet's about 12 years ago). The crema is beautiful, the aroma heavenly, and the taste is what one expects from espresso. Buon gusto!

Review: For my machine (Ascaso), this is the BEST bean ever. I tried so many different beans - Intelligentsia, Java Joe's, Illy, Starbucks, Gorilla, Gimme coffee, Great Barrington, Allegro (from Whole Foods) and Caribou. This produces good crema, but the best part is the flavor and aroma. So well balanced and nutty, not acidic and not bitter. I don't know how it works on other machines but I love this one the most!

Review: This is Wonderful!! The flavor is so smooth and is probably the best I've tasted! I make this in my French press and find that I keep craving more as the day goes on. There is absolutely no bitterness to this espresso and it tastes good with a little sugar or with nothing at all. It also makes a great Latte. buy this and you will be much more critical of other espresso roasts!

Review: I tried this coffe for the first time a couple weeks ago. I am brewing it through a Gaggia Classic espresso machine and am comparing it to Illy, Dallis out of New York, and Lavazzia. I find Illy and Dallis both to be very good coffees. Peets by comparison tastes very fresh and produces the best crema I've seen through my machine. It's pure foam right from the start and the crema on the coffee is dark, thick, and delicious. The flavour is pure coffee essence, smooth with no bitterness at all. Highly recommended. I think the freshness of the beans makes this coffe a step above the others.

Review: The definition of the word coffee! The absolute best coffee I have ever tasted in my life! This blend has a full-bodied taste without any bitterness or the least hint of over-roasted (burned) beans. This is the coffee I want every morning when I wake up. I wish your stores offered this every day of the week. I haven't tried it as a drip coffee but I don't see why it wouldn't be excellent. It's flavors blend together so smoothly that every sip starts out intense and finishes with a mellow creaminess I haven't experienced with any other coffee. How do you get it to do that?

Review: I've been a customer of Peets for over 30 years. I used to buy only Major Dickason, but stopped when it was changed 6 yrs or so ago. It was either changed or you've started buying one of the beans from a different source. At any rate one bean became too dominant. I then have standardised on Espresso Forte, which also had that same strong bean, but it wasn't so strong as to be disturbing. Two weeks ago my new bag did not have that certain bean, or it's amount has been reduced. I vastly prefer what it now tastes like. Has the taste of Major Dickason also changed? Great job.

Review: This coffee truly is a joy. The aroma of the whole bean is intoxicating alone, then once it is ground and brewed - heavenly. I'd like to point out this is the only espresso I've ever been able to drink the way espresso is intended to be enjoyed - black. There is no bitterness at all, just a wonderful depth and body that elevates my mood and helps me ease into my day.

Review: Truly, this is one of the best coffees on the market. I use this blend for cone drip, and havent tried the blend in its intended (espresso) medium. Like it's moniker suggests, this blend is rich in flavor, with a strong bold full-bodied taste, but without any bitterness during or after the sip. It's rare to find a coffee so smooth and rich. In additon due to the richness of this coffee, it also works well over ice.

Gaia Organic Blend®

Every year more certified organic coffee becomes available. Of course, certification does not guarantee cup quality. In Gaia Organic Blend, we have created a coffee amenable equally to palate and planet.

This blend follows the cycle of the seasons, incorporating exceptional crops of certified organic coffee as they are harvested throughout the year. These changes are subtle, but a Gaia aficionado might note in the new year the sweetening influence of a new crop from Colombia, followed in the spring by a lively infusion from Costa Rica, Guatemala, or Ethiopia, and in later months the renewed vigor and balance of beans from Timor or Papua New Guinea. In every season the result is a coffee we are proud to offer, and coupled with our unique roasting style we believe it's the best certified organic coffee available.

Review: I?ve become the brewer for my department at work. We tried the Gaia blend for the first time last week with unanimous enjoyment. I was so pleased with my own first cup that my enthusiasm encouraged a few co-workers who don?t normally drink coffee to try some - they enjoyed it too! I don?t know that I have the coffee tasting terms right, but I experienced the Gaia blend as a rich mouthful with a variety of subtle tastes, as substantial as a cup of hot cocoa without the cloying sweetness. No bitterness, and a lingering aftertaste that said ?complete coffee? rather than bitter, acid, or too strong.

Review: Our favorite Peet's coffee is, hands-down, the Gaia Organic Blend. While my husband and I both enjoy a good cup of coffee, it's hard for us to agree on a single variety of bean or blend--the Gaia Organic has been a repeat favorite with both of us. It's simply got a great, rich flavor that's very satisfying. And not only do we both get to enjoy a great coffee, we also get the satisfaction of supporting organic farming!

Uzuri African Blend

Uzuri African Blend represents a journey of small scale farmers improving their lives through coffee quality, culminating in a malty sweet East African blend with a medley of dark berry notes.

Peet’s newest blend began with our partnership with Technoserve and farmers who did not have "Peet’s quality" beans to sell. Now, working together, we're helping farmers grow higher quality coffee that garner higher prices, delivering more into the farmers' pockets. Their lives begin to improve almost overnight as they rise from overwhelming poverty to stable incomes.

Uzuri African Blend features coffee from Rwanda and Tanzania. The farmers also provided the name; Uzuri is a Swahili word for excellent, or beautiful.

We've crafted Uzuri African Blend in the tradition of Peet’s enduringly popular blends, but with a distinctly African appeal: flowery-fragrant, silky-smooth, and malty-sweet with dark berry undercurrents.

Review: I had to give up caffeine for health reasons and I started on a search for a drinkable decaf that I would enjoy, and after an exhausting search I found the Peets Mocc-Java Decaf to be the best tasting Decaf on the market, bar none! .. furthermore as a bonus the decaf process that Peets uses is one referred to as water pressed and is therefore a healthy process of removing the caffeine, whew, a lot of words but worth the effort of sharing my viewpoint, I special order my coffee here in PA after discovering Peets in person while vacationing in the SF Bay area :)

Review: The best decaf I have ever tasted. I use it for espresso and cappucino, made with a Gaggio espresso machine. When I serve it to friends, they comment how great it is and don't even realise it's decaf. There aren't many decafs that could pull that off. It's a strong but smooth blend, so my wife loves it too, even though she usually prefers milder coffees. There are cheaper coffees out there, but this is worth the extra.

As a dark beverage drinker (red wines, stout beers, etc), this decaf is the only decaf &water process brand that I have ever come across that meets my tastes. It is rich, dark and full of flavor. I actually give it to my house guests and they never know that they are drinking decaf, but yet they all comment on how heavy and good a coffee it is. Order &enjoy!

French Roast

French Roast

Peet’s French Roast is our darkest roast. It’s not a coffee for the cautious, but for those who embrace big, intense flavor.

French Roast is roasted longer and hotter than any of our other blends and that requires that we select a special quality of beans. We choose beans from the highest altitudes of the prime Latin American growing regions. At these high altitudes, the beans mature slowly, becoming denser, harder and packed with flavor. Then they’re deeply roasted to emphasize a distinctive roasty taste while retaining rich coffee character.

Peet’s French Roast is a powerful, deeply flavorful blend that pairs well with cream and sugar.

However, it still has a slight acidic edge to it. This is not bad; some like this. But to my palate I found I prefer Peet''s Sumatra which has absolutely no acidity. Well done, Peet''s.

Review: I found Peets by accident while surfing the internet for coffee information. Over the years I've tried almost all their coffee's. The one that I enjoy the most is the French Roast. I only purchase the whole beans which are freshly roasted and then I grind them within a day or two of brewing. Unfortunately, due to a lack of time I cant grind daily. In addition, I mix regular with decaf as I brew and drink all day from a thermos. The full body and complex flavors makes for a very enjoyable cup -all day long. I''ve tried other roasters French Roast a few times over the years-no contest. I give them to a friend. Whatever blend of beans is used by Peet's, well, they got it right. No more wasting money-I stick with Peet's. Also, I've used other Peet's regular blends along with my Peet's French Roast Decaf for a change of pace and they are also great. I'm currently using the Anniversary Blend which by itself is really enjoyable. In the area where I live I can by some of the Peet's blends in the supermarket and save the high cost of shipping but getting it roasted and shipped from Peet's I know it's fresh.

PEET's french roast happened to be on sale for $8.88, I read the small biography and grabbed it not thinking anything. When I started the coffee maker for the brewing process i have a habit of smelling the coffee as it settles in the coffee pot, I was amazed that it did not have a bittery smell if that makes sense. Review: i drink (1) 16 oz. glass off freshly ground chemex dripped coffee 1st thing every a.m. &that is it for the day. peet's french roast has my daily brew for years. i like my coffee strong, flavorful ¬ burnt &that's what peet's french roast provides. i do not think i have ever had a better french roast &i have brewed only french roast for a far as i can remember. peet's whole bean french roast is consistently roasted to perfection for my taste. my guests who dislike dark roasted coffee say that the peet's french roast transcends any other dark roasted coffee &say it is an exceptional coffee. my guests are finicky about coffee &are not afraid to spit on my floor &pour a bad cup down the drain after i go out of my way of by getting up off the couch &brewing it for them.

Review: Peet's doesn't advertise this (or entirely believe it), but their French Roast is perfectly balanced for espresso drinks -- with or without milk. Great bite and nice sweet finish. Plus good crema, once you get the grind right. If you've only tried French Roast brewed through a drip filter, you'll be surprised at how much flavor and sweetness that lives in these beans.

Review: I joined up for the shipped coffee. i receive french roast that is amazing. it's date stamped and is the best french roast i've ever had. i should have been doing this all along, i've shared this with my friends and they're catching on. i've shared it with friends and they're converting over to peet's. peet's can blow starbucks out of the water, one cup at a time. it's a great product and i'm looking forward to trying other blends and roasts.

Review: This is the finest tasting coffee I have ever had. The smell of the fresh ground beans is just heaven and the taste of the thick dark coffee at the start of the day lingers on. for the best taste drink it black . this is not a coffee for late nights best for cold mornings one tip if you are bought any other coffee that just doesnt quite make it but you cant afford to waste it then mix it with Peet's french roast 50:50 but make quite sure your friends know what to buy next time !

Review: A west-coast client visit introduced me to Peet's when I remarked about how good the coffee was. My client gave me a pound of French Roast to take home. I was hooked. Peet's puts all other coffees to shame. The French Roast is great out of the drip, but phenomenal with a press pot (thanks for the tip, Peet''''s). I''''m now working my way thru the other coffees, joyfully.

Review: I've tried many other so-called French roasts, including some from New Orleans, from Paris, and other sources. None have come close to the richness and body of Peet's. I set my coffee maker to go on in the morning, so that I can rush in to the kitchen for my first cup. It is always a thrill to have that first astonishing taste of rich, dark coffee. Thank you, Peet's.

I love strong, dark coffee, but have never been able to find another dark roast to compare. Decaf French Roast

The characteristic dark and smoky flavors of French Roast are developed by roasting a blend of decaffeinated Latin American coffees a little hotter and longer than our regular roast. High-quality beans are needed to withstand both the effects of decaffeination and the darkness of the roast. This coffee is well-liked by those who want a rich, dark flavor without all the caffeine.

However, I thought that high blood pressure warnings from my doctor spelled an end to these special, full-bodied flavors. Not so; when my wife and I sampled your decaffeinated French roast coffee, it instantly became our coffee of choice. Thanks!

Italian Roast

A blend of coffees from the Pacific and Latin America, Italian Roast has an intense, full-bodied flavor and a balanced and complex aroma, with beans that glisten with natural oils.

The name “Italian Roast” comes from the dark roasting style that is common in Southern Italy (coffees in Northern Italy are normally a bit lighter). Roasting Italian Blend is truly a master’s art, and it is perhaps the most demanding of all our coffees to roast. The roaster watches, listens, smells the beans as they roast, waiting for the brief moment when these premium beans reach dark roasted perfection.

Italian Roast is a good choice for those who like a darker roast for espresso, and makes a great cup with a classic Italian stove-top coffee maker.

House Blend

Alfred Peet began Peet’s in 1966 as one small shop on a quiet corner in Berkeley, California. He became known as the pioneer of a distinctively higher quality, high-grown coffee, deeply roasted to maximize flavor. Our House Blend is a perfect introduction to the fine coffee that we’ve specialized in since our founding. It’s a quality cup — carefully selected, choice beans — in this case, a blend from our favorite Latin American origins. It is deep-roasted to deliver the most flavor and aroma, and it’s the freshest coffee imaginable, always roasted and shipped on the same day.

You may have tasted a House Blend before, you may have tasted Latin American coffees, but with your first sip of our House Blend, you’ll notice the distinctive quality of Peet’s and the spicy satisfaction of a great Latin blend.

Review: Recently, a co-worker recommended that I try Peet?s Coffee so when I was in my local grocery store I picked up a bag and poured it into the grinder. I knew right away I had a great coffee as I could smell the deep rich fresh aroma of the beans. Simply put, I was blown away by the taste ?it was the smoothest and most creamy coffee I have every sampled. For years I have been hunting for coffee that doesn?t leave you with a bitter or acidy after taste ? not any easy task by any measure. While I have settled for some ?satisfactory? blends I never found a creamy balanced coffee until I picked up my first bag of Peet?s House Blend. If you try this particular blend I guarantee you?ll be so spoiled you?ll never want to drink another brand again!!! It?s not only fills your taste buds with pure coffee flavor it?s also very easy on your stomach. By the way, I use Peet?s House Blend with my espresso machine and it produces consistent creamy cups each and every time. In fact, because the House Blend produces a smooth balanced flavor I also stopped using artificial sweeteners. I guarantee you with Peet?s House Blend you?ll no longer need to add sugar or artificial sweeteners. Keep roasting!!!

Colombia

Over the years, Colombian washed Arabica coffee has moved towards high-yield varieties that negatively impacted brightness, flavor and complexity. Still, if one is willing to work at finding some special lots, it's possible to get exceptional Colombian coffee.

We buy a very flavorful Colombian coffee from the southern province of Huila. This is one region of the country that still grows the old, traditional coffee variety called typica instead of the newer hybrids. It is very encouraging that enough growers there still believe in traditional quality, enabling quality-conscious buyers to find good coffee. We hope that our support of their efforts will provide incentive for other producers to return to the old varieties, which established Colombian coffee's reputation in the first place. Our selection is full-bodied and has a sweet, well-rounded flavor.

Sumatra

This is the classic Indo-Pacific coffee. On the island of Sumatra, coffees are grown by small landholders who may have only a few trees on their property. The coffees are processed by hand. The cherries are passed through a hand-cranked pulper, the beans hulled while still dark gray-green and moist, and dried in the sun without their parchment shells. The net result of this minimal processing is coffee with very heavy body and full flavor. The flavors are sweet and somewhat earthy with pronounced herbal nuances.

Sumatra is one of our best-selling coffees, and it’s not hard to understand why. The complex flavors and full body brought out by Peet’s roast make an exceptionally gutsy, richly seductive cup.

Review: The description Peet''s gives of this coffee is very accurate, excepting "herbal nuances." That''s a bit of a stretch. It is "very full" bodied and "smooth" with a capital S. To me it''s the earthy pu-ehr (Chinese tea) of coffees. Maybe not everybody''s taste but if the descriptors float your boat, this is the coffee for you. Well done, Peet''s!

Review: I''m fairly new to coffee having been and continuing to be an Indian black and Chinese Pu-ehr tea drinker since antiquity. Got into Peet''s via their French roast using a mini-French press. Delightful. Then perused the various coffee offerings and decided to give Sumatra a try for its "very full body, smooth liveliness and earthy" flavor. It is all of these and then some with a sweet loamy aroma and satisfying earthy on-the-tongue aftertaste, What a pleasant surprise! Couldn''t get the whole bean version here so I settled for the already-ground one. It is good, very good, I assume the whole-bean one is a bit better. Thanks, Peet''s.

We moved to the DC area in 1985 and am happy to report that I've been able to get my coffee via the mail, or in stores here in this area. I've traveled far and near and have never found coffee that comes close to Peet's. I wish, wish, wish that this area had stores. I would frequent them. I speak about Peet's every chance I get. Review: I recently tried your Sumatra coffee. My first impression was being very impressed by the beans. They were so large that my grinder had a hard time feeding them. I also agree with your "gutsy and earthy richness" description, but I disagree on some other points. I've had a couple of Sumatran Coffees before, Mendheling and Batak, and I would never call a Sumatran, "not the most refined or elegant." It's certainly not the most expensive, but that's a plus when the coffee is so good. Your Sumatran coffee raises a single complaint in me. It was good, and drinkable, but it didn't measure up to the other Sumatras I've had. I noticed that you used a pretty dark roast on it, and I think that may be the problem. Sumatran's are supposed to be rich but delicate. Because they commonly have a mottled appearance up to and even into second crack, roasters will overroast Sumatrans. I enjoyed this coffee, but I wouldn't pick it.

Review: Peet's description says it's "not a fine coffee, but has a full body and is earthy". The amazing thing is that with this coffee, every sip comes with a new taste of a different flavor, and it is the fullest bodied coffee I've had, definitely earthy. If this is not fine coffee, I can easily do without finesse. Awesome coffee at a great price!

Review: I had been drinking The Major (my favorite) for about 6 months straight when I decided to chage gears a bit and go for Sumatra. It is a fantastic blend (but isn't all Peet's fantastic). It is very full and sweet and the flavor on the tongue is so concentrated as to almost be tangy--it really hits you. Wonderfully balanced by richness and a very full body.

I chose the Sumatra as my first try for buy coffee to take home. The coffee was perfect. She helped me with tips on how much water to coffee. I also bought Black Currant tea which I have not tried yet but again the girl helped me to learn how to brew it perfectly. I will write a review of your teas when I make it.

Review: I worked next door to the Domingo Ave location in Berkeley for nearly 13yrs. I drank alot of Peets coffee, sometimes 4 cups a day. One day a friend brought me over cup of coffee and it tasted like nothing I've ever tasted, it definitely was the BEST cup of coffee I ever drank. I asked what blend it was - he didn't know, I couldn't leave work. I had to find out what flavor of coffee I was drinking. After several attempts to sneak out of work, I just called next door - it was Sumatra! Living in NYC I mail order and mostly order House Blend, saving Sumatra for special occasions.

Review: I came across your site while savoring my favorite Peets coffee: Sumatra and I thought I'd tell you how much I enjoy this blend. It may sound crazy but as a New Yorker your coffee is a perfect match. It is strong but if you linger it has gentle depth, it can be aggressive and yet has a soothing warmth, it has many layers and hidden tastes yet has its own unique individuality. My favorite treat early in the morning or at the end of a long day.

Garuda Blend®

This blend originates in the islands of Oceania and Indonesia. Each of the coffees in this blend has distinctively different flavor characteristics the result of unique approaches to coffee production and processing on the various islands in the archipelago.

Hand pulped village coffees provide full body and nutty, earthy flavors; while beans processed by the washed method bring acidity and a more refined flavor to the blend. Anyone who likes Indonesian coffees will appreciate Garuda Blend’s well-balanced flavor. It is named for the great bird that carries the Hindu god Vishnu, guardian of the world. Garuda Blend has long been a favorite of Peet’s baristas and makes an excellent espresso.

Review: Honest, I didn't mean to be unfaithful to New Guinea Highlands, but now I have two loves. Garuda is deeper and "muddier" in the good sense, similar to a "cortado," as Wendy points out in her review. But it has all the flavor complexity of the New Guinea -- with maybe a slightly sweeter aftertaste. Let me tell you: it makes delicious ice coffee (brewed in advance and cooled). In a presspot. Plain, no cream, no sugar. On the rocks. Very strong. I wake up at 4:30 every morning to have two "free" hours to write, and confront Texas summer heat with cool, strong coffee over cubes of ice. ...Wow!

Review: Once I discovered Garuda I knew this was it! Sumatra Blue Batak is a close second. My fav coffee in the world, all continents except Antarctica represented, lol, is cafe cortado in Spain. It''s basically espresso with a dab of steamed milk. I do not add the requisite sugar the Spaniards do. Garuda is not bitter as I find the Italian roasts nor as oily as the French roasts. While coffee is a very polarizing and passionate topic even amongst Peetniks much less the majority who prefer a lighter, more acidic coffee such as the "S" chain, God bless our right to choose! (We have to keep a "reg" coffee in the house for company otherwise no one will drink our "mud".)

Review: It's interesting - the very things that other reviewers say they like about this coffee are the very things I can't stand. Honestly, I do not like this coffee at all. I find the clash between the Earthiness and the Chocolate flavor make this coffee unpalatable. Then again, I don't like the taste of coffee and chocolate together. If you like these tastes together, I'm sure you will love this coffee.

Review: As a loyal Peet's morning, afternoon, and Friday morning Dunsmuir train stop drinker of Peet's fresh coffee, I am grateful for your daily efforts. My first Peet's experience was your first launch of Peet's Davis, CA. I found an instant favorite in the Pride of the Port tea (in can) and the Garuda blend. Upon reading the product origin for Garuda, I was utterly convinced Peet's had found my daily grind. I have this at Chevron Refinery every morning during safety briefings and "accidently leave open bags for all coffee addicts to sample." The FCC crew has gained your loyalty. I suspect they go the the Solano Avenue store for their beans. In the afternoon, I have a Peet's espresso with turbinado sugar (raw) and a faint squeeze of lemon along with Gerolsteiner Mineral Wasser, a German favorite. The best service has been with Mikey, Lafayette, very nice. I escape my Bay Area lifestyle on a northbound train to see my niece and two nephews in Ashland, Oregon. Simply beautiful was your recent Ethiopian offering with fragrant hints of blueberry, perfect with the local's biscuits and gravy in Medford. Question; Will you ever open a store in Klamath Falls, Or. If yes, I'll be your loudest sounding board. Ever loyal Pat Eder 415.359.7721

Decaf Major Dickason’s Blend®

Major Dickason’s is our most beloved blend. Born in the earliest days of Peet’s, it's the result of collaboration between a customer a local gourmand and coffee aficionado and Alfred Peet.
